For this week’s reading I choose Notes on the Folklore of the Fjort by R.E. Dennet which is a part of the Congo readings. This reading really gave me some insight into the culture of the people from the Congo. In many of the tales the husbands have multiple wives, usually two but sometimes even three. The wives of course have a hard time getting along each other and their children sometimes suffer from this. But everyone seems to be okay with the multiple wives. Additionally, the husbands seemed more supportive and respectful of their wives. This also seems to be something that is a part of the culture like in tale of The Wicked Husband. In the tale, the husband mistreats his wife but the prince has the husband killed because he mistreats his wife. Another common theme with the Congo tales is the rivalry between siblings, mostly bothers. In the tales of The Twin Brothers, The Vanishing Wife and Another Vanishing Wife the brothers do not get along and one ends of being killed in the end. However, in the tale of, The Younger Brother Who Knew More Than The Elder the brothers are able to come together. For my stories, I really like to focus on happier ending. So, I could possible change one of the endings to a sibling’s story to where the brothers reconcile and learn to get along and love each other.
