Growth Mindset

Powerful words of “Not Yet” Source: Flickr by John Drake

I have worked with children for over 8 years (the first 5 years in a daycare setting) and have worked in public schools for 3 of those 8 years. Until this class I had not heard about Growth Mindset. Even though I believe this should be being taught to all educators in our school district. Carol Dweck idea of “not yet” is amazing. In the public schools, I work with special education students mostly. We run into the problem of these students having the mindset that they cannot do certain things based on their disabilities. Obviously to teacher this could not be more wrong but it is hard to convince them of anything else, they have been told that it is okay when they can’t. But if we started these all students not just those with disabilities that when they cannot do something it doesn’t mean they will never accomplish it but just “not yet”. That is what educators are here for, to help students learn and reach new potentials and goals. I actually have already showed some of the teachers from the school The Growth Mindset videos we watched. I cannot wait to learn more on the Growth Mindset and ways I can use it with my students I work with daily.

  1. Hey Ashley! I love the growth mindset posts. They are honestly some of my favorite assignments to do. I love how you are taking what you learn and applying it to your everyday life! I am sure working with kids has allowed you to apply many of the strategies talked about. That is what is so great about these assignments, you can really apply them to every area of your life.
