Storybook Favorites

The first storybook that I came across was The Stolen Princess. After I read the interdiction I was intrigued by the mystery of the book. I am not familiar with fairy folklore which intern made me more interested in the story.  The author’s notes at the bottom were a big help to clarify some of the terms and common behavior that you would see from fairies. I also enjoyed the way this author told her story. The audience has to keep reading on so that they can learn about plan that the fairies had been waiting to accomplish for sixteen years as well as what exactly the king did to the fairies to incur such vengeance from them. While the story was great, nothing in the layout or images chosen enhanced the story to entice more readers to continue on. From this story, I will try to take away leaving some mystery in my story to keep reader intrigued with the story and continue on.

The second storybook that I chose was High School Gods. What first brought this story to my attention was the combination of the Greek Good and them going through High School as teenagers. From my prior knowledge of Greek Mythology, I really enjoyed the new story that the author put together on the major Gods and Goddess. The author also did a good job of explaining in the author’s note why she chose to give the character certain stories and background information that did not fit into that God or Goddess typical behavior, like Poseidon being afraid of the water when he was younger. A surprising element that the author brought in was that the story was being told by the Principal or Cronus. Having the narration done by a character made the stories even better. However, once again I was not too impressed with the layout and pictures chosen for the story. Images of statues of the Greek Gods were used even though the story was told as if the Gods were teenagers in high school.

The final storybook that I chose was Nursery Rhymes in the Digital Age. This story had many elements that I enjoyed and could use depending on what I write my own story about. I was not aware that there were sites that you could create fake Facebook, text, twitter, and snapchats from. These images that coordinated with the different nursery rhymes gave the story much better visuals. The author also chose to put a picture in the background behind the title of the nursery rhyme. This helps readers get a since of what the story was going to be about if they did not have prior knowledge of that nursery rhyme. I had never heard of the nursery rhyme Georgie Porgie but with the background having kissing lips gave me a clue about what the story might be about. The author also rhymed not only the new digital age nursery rhyme they created but also the background story that went with it.
